Mr. Mark C. Honeywell was born and raised in Wabash. He developed a water heating system which led to the formation of Honeywell Heating Specialties in 1906. By the early 1920s, the factory was focused on making thermostats and automatic controls for heating systems and employed 450 people.
In 1927, Honeywell merged his business with a Minneapolis-based company to create the Minneapolis Honeywell Regulator Co., of which he served as president. Eventually the company became known as Honeywell Inc. Today, Honeywell Inc. is a Fortune 500, multi-national corporation with more than 100,000 employees.
In addition to business knowledge, Honeywell was also a student of the arts. He was an amateur photographer and dabbled in filmmaking at his Wabash film studio (which later became the Wabash Country Club.) He was vice-president of the Hoosier Art Salon and an amateur violinist.
His dedication to recreation and fine arts led Honeywell to build the Honeywell Memorial Community Center, dedicated to his parents and his late wife Olive, who passed away in 1939. The Honeywell Foundation was established in 1941 to oversee the construction and management of the Center.
As the Honeywell Foundation was being established, Mr. Honeywell married his long-time friend Eugenia Nixon, a successful businesswoman and owner of Nixon Newspapers Inc. Eugenia shared Honeywell's dedication for the arts and played a key role in the direction of the Honeywell Foundation.
Mark Honeywell passed away in September 1964. He left behind a legacy that lives today through the Honeywell Center, Honeywell Foundation, and its many programs and offerings.
