In 1950s, actually there were some higher education institutions like Faculty of Technique and Faculty of Science which were part of the University of Indonesia (Universitas Indonesia) and Perguruan Tinggi Pendidikan Guru (PTPG) in Bandung. However, the society demanded a state university that can provide a variety range of disciplines. A huge attention from the local and central government to build a state university in Bandung was increasing, particularly when Bandung was appointed to be the host for Asia-Afrika Conference in 1955.
Therefore, on October 14th, 1956, Committee for Establishing a State University (Panitia Pembentukan Universitas Negeri) was formed. This committee was formed at Balai Kotapraja Bandung. On the second meeting on December 3rd, 1956, the committee appointed a delegation including Prof. Muh. Yamin, Mr. Soenardi, Mr. Bushar Muhammad, and other West Java’s prominent figures. The delegation have a responsibility to deliver the West Java people’s aspiration about establishing a state university in Bandung to the government, House of Representatives of Bandung City and Bandung Regency, the governor of West Java, the President of UI, the chief of parliament, Minister of PPK, and the President of Republic of Indonesia.
Delegates had successfully carried out their duties properly, so the government through Ministerial Decree No. KDP. 11 181 / S dated February 2, 1957, decided to establish the State Committee for Establishment of the State University (PNPUN) in Bandung.
On August 25, 1957 the Agency Workers (BP) and PNPUN was chaired by R. Ipik Gandamana, Governor of West Java, were established. BP was formed with the aim to accelerate the birth of the UN. The result of BP is the birth of Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) on Wednesday, September 11, 1957, confirmed by PP. 37 of 1957 dated 18 September 1957 (Statute No. 91st, 1957).
Then based on the Ministerial Decree No. PPK. 91445/CIII dated 20 September, the status and function of BP changed into Unpad Presidium appointed by the President on 24 September 1957 in Bandung governorate office.
The name “Padjadjaran” is taken from the name of the Kingdom of Sunda, which Padjadjaran kingdom led by King Siliwangi or King Dewantaprana Maharaja Sri BadugaPakuanPadjadjaran (1473-1513 AD). This name is the name of the most famous and remembered by the people of West Java, because of the fame figure among kings in tatarSunda at the time.
At the time of its establishment, Unpad consists of 4 faculties: Faculty of Law and Knowledge Society, Faculty of Economics (both originated from the Freedom Foundation at the University of Bandung), the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (Guidance and Counseling, an incarnation of PTPG in Bandung), and the Faculty of Medicine.
On 18 September 1960, the Faculty of Physical Education (FPJ) as a change from the Academy of Physical Education has opened. In 1963-1964, FPJ and FKIP have been separated fromUnpad and each one into the Academy of Sports and the Institute of Teacher Training & Education (Teachers’ Training College, now the University of Education Indonesia).
Within 6 years, Unpad has increased another eight faculties, there are: Faculty of Social and Political (October 13, 1958, now FISIP), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (Faculty, 1 November 1958), the Faculty of Letters (1 November 1958, is now the Faculty Cultural Studies), Faculty of Agriculture (Agriculture Faculty, 1 November 1959), the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG, 1 November 1959), Faculty Publication (18 September 1960, is now the Communication Faculty), Faculty of Psychology (FPSI, 1 September 1961), and the Faculty of Animal Husbandry (Fapet, July 27, 1963).
In 2005, Unpad has opened another three faculty; there are Faculty of Nursing (FIK, June 8, 2005), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK, July 7, 2005), and Faculty of Agricultural Industrial Engineering (FTIP, 13 September 2005).
Over two years later, Unpad improves the status of two majors in Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Pharmacy; Department of Pharmacy became (October 17, 2006), as well as a Faculty of Engineering, Department of Earth Sciences Geology (FTG, December 12, 2007).
In order to improve the performance of the university, on 7 September 1982, Unpad opened the Faculty of Graduate. This faculty organizes educational levels of S-2 (Masters Program) and S-3 (Doctoral program). In further developments, the Faculty of Graduate transferred to Graduate Program. In an effort to meet the middle-skilled experts, Unpad also organizes educational Diploma Program (S-0) for some fields of science.
Leadership in Unpad also experienced growth in officially, structurally, and organizationally. Leadership of the first form of the Presidium, the chairman R. Ipik Gandamana, the Vice Chairman of R. Djusar Subrata, and the Secretary.Soeradi Wikantaatmadja and R Suradiradja.
Furthermore on November 6, 1957 Mr. Iwa Koesoemasoemantri was appointed President of Unpad, based on Presidential Decree No. 14/M/1957, dated October 1, 1957. The Swearing has been done at the State Palace. In the exercise of duties, the President of the University Senate of Unpad accompanied by Secretary Prof. M. Sadarjun Siswomartojo, Kusumahatmadja, and Mr. Bushar Muhammad.
Since 1963, the name of University President was changed to the Rector and the University Secretary or Authorization designation was changed to Vice President Rector.

Jatinangor Campus
Inspired by the “Tsukuba Academic City”, the sixth Unpad Rector, Prof.. Dr. Hindersah Wiraatmadja initiated “Manglayang Academic City”, which is located at the foot of Mount Manglayang.
The concept was to answer Unpad campus issues that spread across 13 different locations, making it hard to coordinate and develop the capacity, in addition to improving productivity, quality of graduates, and the development of facilities / physical infrastructure.
Since 1977, Unpad pioneered the provision of adequate land and in 1979 a new agreement with the appointment of former plantation land in Jatinangor.
Based on the Decree of the Governor of West Java No. 593/3590/1987, the area is covering a total area of 3285.5 hectares, which is divided into seven regions designated. Especially for Unpad, Jatinangor campus development area covers 175 h.
Gradually, Unpad have started moving its education activities into Jatinangorsince 1983, initiated by the Faculty of Agriculture. This was followed by other faculties inUnpad. On January 5, 2012, UnpadRectorate building is officially moved to Jatinangor.
