Caterpillar 1990's

1991 - Kuwait
Around 700 Caterpillar machines help extinguish the 750 oil wells on fire in Kuwait.
When Coalition forces liberated Kuwait in February of 1991, they were confronted with one of the world's worst environmental disasters. More than six million barrels of oil had spilled into the sea off the Kuwait coast. In the oil fields nearly 750 wells had been set ablaze or were left gushing millions of gallons of crude onto the surrounding desert. Raging fires were consuming five million barrels of oil each day. Noxious black smoke hung over the country, filtering out the sun and turning day into night. Prevailing winds spread air-borne pollutants throughout the region to fall as acid rain in Saudi Arabia, Iran and even parts of the Indian sub-continent.

European Football King

Chelsea became the first side to hold the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League titles simultaneously as Branislav Ivanovic's stoppage-time header earned a 2-1 victory over Benfica in Amsterdam.

Fernando Torres' sixth goal in six Europa League games gave the Blues a lead which was cancelled out by a penalty from Oscar Cardozo, awarded for handball against Cesar Azpilicueta. Frank Lampard hit the bar in the 88th minute before the winner came from the most unlikely source as defender Ivanovic, who missed last May's Champions League win through suspension, headed in a corner in the first minute of stoppage time.

Monterrey break new ground with hat-trick

With six minutes remaining in the second leg of this year’s CONCACAF Champions League final, the game seemed to be up for two-time defending champions Monterrey. Trailing 2-1 at home to Santos and by the same aggregate scoreline after a goalless first leg, Los Rayados looked set to relinquish the title to the team they beat in last year’s final.

Those last six minutes proved to be memorable ones, however, as the home side struck three times to emerge 4-2 winners and book themselves a place at the FIFA Club World Cup Morocco 2013, the third time running they will be appearing in the world finals for clubs.
